The mission of the Baskin School Alumni Advisory Council is to leverage the talent and experience of its members to provide guidance and leadership to the Dean, faculty, students, staff and alumni of the UCSC Baskin School of Engineering. The council will provide assistance in maintaining, building and promoting the Baskin School as a premiere research and teaching institution. It will help the Baskin School build a pipeline of private philanthropy, foster connections to extramural resources, and provide support to encourage public/private research and educational collaborations.
Advise the Baskin School Dean on future directions of engagement that will further solidify the Baskin School as a technologically innovative engineering school of the 21st century and help establish its brand in the Silicon Valley.
Help connect students with industry experts for career networking. Help connect the Baskin School with judges, sponsors, and project ideas for the capstone engineering project course. Liaison with leaders of student clubs, societies, and groups (ACM, EGSA, eWomen, IEEE, ISMA, MEP, QG, SHPE, NSBE, SWE, TauBetaPi, etc). Liaison with the University Career Center in support of their student recruitment activities.
Help promote the Baskin School in its collaborative mission by co-sponsoring university lectures, seminars, research reviews and other engineering related inter-disciplinary activities. Assist the university in identifying partners and investors in support of its entrepreneurial activities.
Help with planning and organizing meaningful networking events for Baskin School alumni with the goal of increasing alumni engagement and philanthropy. Assist the Baskin School Dean and the Development Office in identifying candidates for an annual ‘Distinguished Alumni’ and ‘Distinguished Young Alumni’ award, to be presented by the Dean. Work with Baskin staff to publicize alumni activities that help forward the reputation of the Baskin School via alumni profiles, stories, career achievements, and relevant social activities.
Provide guidance and creative leadership in organization of fund raising activities to support the Baskin School endowment, named academic chairs, student scholarships, graduate fellowships, student travel, and purchase of student project materials. Personally help with identification of prospective donors for various Baskin School initiatives. Act as an ambassador by making the case for why supporting the Baskin School matters, based on own personal philanthropic giving.
